Do Trans-Humanism and Traditional Religion Agree on the Possibility of a Disembodied Personality?

Introduction

The existence of trans-humans in a disembodied form usually elicits mixed feelings and opinions from diverse schools of thought. These debate has been going on from the early centuries, and it has drawn the opinions of the different world religious groups, philosophers and atheists, and even the modern day scientists. This is always instigated by the concerns on human mortality and if there is any possibilities of humans postponing their aging or even attaining immortality. Both ancient and modern religious beliefs, evolutionists, and modern scientists have given their views on the mortality of humans and the various forms of human existence, including what they believe happens after death. Both traditional religion and trans-humans seem to agree in various aspects on the possibilities of humans existing as disembodied personalities at a given point in time.

Immortality and Trans-humans

Immortality is one of the major areas of concern in traditional religions. It has always been viewed in various aspects including the survival of astral bodies that resemble physical bodies, resurrection of bodies after death, and the immaterial souls’ immortality. This is because traditional religions believe in human life being a combination of the physical body with the spirit and the soul.  Some traditional religions believe that the human are made up of a physical body that can be seen, heard, and touched and an astral form that constitutes of a mysterious celestial material, which is not solid and so cannot be touched but it can be seen. In an occurrence of death, this astral body detaches itself from the physical body. The physical body is left to decompose and degenerate but the astral body continues to exist. In another bias, the soul’s immortality is like the astral body and human beings are believed to be made up of the physical body and a soul. The soul survives death when the physical body dies but it is immaterial and so the human senses cannot perceive it. The souls does not exist since it does not occupy space and it is believed to be located somewhere in space. Through these forms, traditional religion strongly supports the existence of disembodied personality.

Trans-humanism is a modern scientific and cultural movement that celebrates cyberspace as a kind of realm for disembodied beings. The trans-humanists have are also concerned with the aging and mortality of the humans, and they have endeavored to at least extend human life or even achieve immortality. One of trans-humanism’s most radical aspect is the scenario where the content of the human brain and mind will be transferred to abiotic entities in a bid to achieve immortality. This can be achieved by scanning the human brain’s synaptic structure and then implement these exact computations in electronic media. The beings that will be formed out of this process will exist on the web, having the ability to project bodies whenever they feel they need them in the forms of holographic projections, virtual bodies, or even physical bodies. This is substantial evidence for the trans-human support for existence of disembodied personality.

Conclusion

It is clearly evident that although the ways of thinking of the traditional religious believers and the trans-humanists are diverse, they both support the existence of humans as disembodied personalities. Traditional religion believes that humans have both a physical existence and an invisible form that is immortal while the trans-humanists aim at achieving immortality through replication of the human brain and making it ever-existent in an electronic form. Their different approaches are aimed at achieving immortality through disembodied personalities.
